Lagophthalmos

This term is used when there is insufficiency or failure in eyelid closure.  This most often occurs due to reduced orbicularis function secondary to a 7th (facial) nerve weakness eg Bell’s palsy.  The sclera (and/or cornea) is still visible even when an individual is trying to forcibly close their eye.
